About Epilepsy Surgery
Epilepsy surgery is a consideration for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, where seizures cannot be controlled by conventional medicine. It is performed when seizure occurrences seriously interrupt the quality of life, and other treatments have not helped. The aimed purpose of epilepsy surgery is to remove two different portions or to alter one part of the brain, which instigates seizures, so the patient can have a long-term future free from seizures and live a more fulfilling life in general. A broad battery of tests may be conducted before surgery. Apart from imaging techniques like MRI and functional imaging for localization of seizure activity, usually patients may also have whatever detailed information they will from the focus of their seizures. There are some occasions that electrocorticography or long-term video-EEG monitoring is needed to gather information about the seizure focus. In some rare cases, invasive monitoring with implanted electrodes is necessary to accurately localize the seizures. Once a focus based on the predetermined goal is defined, it may elect to execute either colobectomy, focal resection, or exlusively other less invasive procedures, namely laser ablation. Responsive neuro-stimulation is implantation of a device, which delivers electrical stimulation on concern of the development of a seizure. Epilepsy surgery can bring significant advantages to the lives of many, including seizure freedom or less frequent seizure occurrences. That being said, there are some risks involved in surgery, including cognitive and neurological side effects, which are weighed up against the benefits during a decision-making process.
