What is Standard Milk Formula?
Standard Milk Formula, also known as baby milk, infant milk, false milk, or first milk, is a manufactured food that is prepared from powder (mixed with water) or liquid (with or without additional water) for feeding to babies and infants under the age of 12 months. Infant formula is defined by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) as a portion of food that purports to be or is represented for special dietary use solely as food for infants due to its simulated universe of human milk or its adaptability as a complete or part result of insufficient milk. Manufacturers claim that the composition of infant formula is based on a human mother's milk at one to three months postpartum, but there are major differences in the nutrient density of these products. Purified cow's milk whey and casein as a protein supplement, a blend of vegetable oils as a fat source, found in milk as a source of carbohydrates, a vitamin-mineral combination, and other products contain cow's milk whey and casein as a protein supplement, a blend of vegetable oils as a fat source, found in milk as a source of carbohydrates, a vitamin-mineral combination, and other products contain different amounts according to the manufacturer. Furthermore, there are infant formulas that use soybean as a protein source instead of cow's milk (mostly in the United States and the United Kingdom), as well as formulas that use protein hydrolyzed into its constituent amino acids for newborns who are allergic to other proteins. In many countries, an increment in breastfeeding has been accompanied by a delay in the average age of introduction of baby foods (including cow's milk), which results in both steadily increasing breastfeeding and increased use of infant formula between the ages of three and twelve months.
