About Intravascular Ultrasound
In Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) When a transducer or a probe is placed into blood vessels, it produces sound waves that create images of the blood vessels. The ultrasonic wand is attached to the top of a thin tube which is called a catheter which produces ultrasound. The catheter is inserted into an artery and moved towards the heart in case of cardiovascular ultrasound. Intravascular Ultrasound can provide important information like the amount and type of plaque build-up which is helpful in determining if a patient is at heart’s risk. Intravascular Ultrasound unlike ionizing radiation does not have harmful effects and can provide clear pictures of soft tissues which are difficult to see on x-ray images. Intravascular Ultrasound requires little or no special preparation but if the patient is already suffering from any condition then the doctor would have to take precautions. In March 2021, FDA announced a recall of certain lots of ACIST Kodama Intravascular Ultrasound Catheter due to the possibility of the risk of broken O-ring pieces flushing into arteries during their use. The ACIST Kodama Intravascular Ultrasound Catheter (HD-IVUS uses ultrasound to view the inside of an artery. If there is damage then O-ring might break free and flush into the patient’s artery during use which can cause harm including vessel blockage.
