About Image Signal Processor
An image signal processor is a dedicated piece of integral equipment of imaging systems, such as smartphones, webcams, or digital cameras, while converting unprocessed image data into high-quality images. The ISP is like the digital brain and applies a series of complicated algorithms and other signal processing techniques to determine and tune the quality parameters of the image, including brightness, contrast, and color balance. It enhances signal output through automatic scene and face recognition. This includes noise reduction, color correction, automatic exposure, autofocus, white balance adjustment, demosaicing, and image compression. Noise-reduction algorithms reduce noise during acquisition of an image, particularly when images are taken under low light conditions. Colour correction brings the image in line with the reality of the scene. Automatic exposure changes the brightness, while white balance adjusts the color temperature. Demosaicing transforms raw Bayer-patterned image data into a normal full-color image. To be sure, in this respectively ISPs are integral components, because while image data coming from the image sensor, they make those processes happen, such as noise reduction and HDR correction. These also comprise face recognition and automatic scene recognition. With an increase in the level of image data for modern sensing applications, vast amounts of data demand rapid and seamless capture capabilities, which makes ISPs the central concern.
