About Automotive Airbag Inflators
Automotive airbag inflators are among the most essential parts of the airbag system in a car, as they inflate airbags within a few milliseconds after impact, protecting people inside the car. The inflation of an airbag is the result of either a chemical reaction or a gas generation system filling the airbag with gas at a speed close to that of light. Generally, inflators are activated through sensors that monitor rapid deceleration and thereby activate the airbag system. There are chemical inflators, using a propellant to create gas, and then there are the gas-based inflators, where the gas stored is compressed in the form of nitrogen. Depending on the type of requirement, the vehicle manufacturer will choose its technology, whether it is related to deployment speed, pressure, or safety considerations. The inflator gas will fill the airbag, inflating it, which cushions the occupant's body during the crash, therefore reducing the potential injury.
