Distilled tall oil (DTO) is described as a unique mixture of rosin and fatty acids, with approximately 40% resin and 60% fatty acid content. Distilled tall oil consists of fatty acid fraction, which is represented by linolic, linolenic, oleic and other acids, as well as of resin acids fraction abietic, dihydroabietic, palustric, neoabietic, isopimaric and others. DTO can be used in soaps and coating applications, as well as in the glue and paint production. For analytical applications, pimaric and isopimaric acids can be crystallised from DTO. Tall oil is the most significant domestic source of rosin and a key contributor to the production of fatty acids in the United States.
