Market Snapshot:
A cotton harvester is a machine that is used to harvest cotton balls. There are two types of mechanical cotton harvesters: strippers and pickers. Stripper-type harvesters remove the entire plant from both open and unopened seed pods, along with many leaves and stems. The unwanted material is removed by special devices at the gin. Strippers work best after frost has killed the green vegetative growth. Pickers, also known as spindle-type harvesters, remove the cotton from open bolls and leave the bur on the plant. The spinners, which rotate on their axes at a high speed, are connected to a cylinder that also rotates, causing the spinners to enter the plant, and the cotton fibers are wrapped around the wet spindles and then stripped by a special device called a doffer, from which the cotton is delivered to a large basket carried above the machine.
