About Event Data Recorder
Event Data Recorder is a device installed in a motor vehicle to record technical vehicle and occupant information for a brief period of time before, during and after a crash. Event data recorders track vehicle data such as speed, acceleration, braking, steering, and air-bag deployment. Information from these devices can be collected after a crash and analyzed to help determine what the vehicles were doing before, during and after the crash or event. Usage of the device in road vehicles varied from manufacturer to manufacturer, but EDRs are now mandated in all new vehicles. In the United States, every major automaker selling cars builds event data recorders into new vehicles.
