About Gel Documentation Systems
A gel documentation system, also known as gel imaging or gel imaging system, is used in molecular biology laboratories to visualize and document nucleic acids and proteins suspended within a polyacrylamide or agarose gel. These gels are usually stained with ethidium bromide or other fluorophores such as SYBR Green. Generally, the gel document contains an ultraviolet (UV) light transilluminator, a cover or blind to shield external light sources and protect the user from UV radiation, and a CCD or CMOS camera to capture images. A gel document system is used for registration. and to analyze the results of gel electrophoresis and membrane blot experiments.
