About Intermittent Catheters
A catheter is a thin flexible tube that is inserted into the urethra or through a stoma in order to drain urine from the bladder. The intermittent catheter doesn’t stay in the bladder, like an indwelling (Foley) catheter does. Intermittent catheters drain urine, and then it can be withdrawn and throw them away after each use. Straight-tip intermittent catheters are the most frequently used short-term catheters. The intermittent catheters are usually made from silicone or latex and come in a variety of lengths. Intermittent catheterization is extensively advocated as an operative bladder management strategy for patients with incomplete bladder emptying due to idiopathic or neurogenic detrusor (bladder) dysfunction (NDO).
