About Manual Resuscitator
A bag valve mask (BVM), which is sometimes also known by its proprietary name as Ambu bag or broadly as a manual resuscitator or a self-inflating bag, is commonly a hand-held device which is mainly used for providing positive pressure ventilation to the patients who are not able to breathe or are not breathing sufficiently. This device is not necessarily required as a part of the resuscitation kits for any of the trained professionals in any of the out-of-hospital settings like the ambulance crews and is also very often used in the hospitals as a part of the standard equipment which is found on a crash cart, in emergency rooms or other critical care settings. Manual resuscitators are also at times used within the hospitals for the temporary ventilation of the patients that are dependent on the mechanical ventilators when these ventilators need to be examined for any kind of possible malfunctioning or when the ventilator-dependent patients are shifted within the hospital. There are two main types of manual resuscitators that exist; one of the versions is self-filling with air, although this additional oxygen (O2) can be added but is not very much necessary for the device to function. The other type of manual resuscitator is greatly used in non-emergency applications such as in the operating room so as to ventilate the patients during anesthesia induction as well as recovery. The usage of these manual resuscitators is to ventilate a patient which is frequently called "bagging" the patient and is thus regularly necessary during the medical emergencies whenever the patient's breathing is found to be insufficient or has a respiratory failure or has stopped completely i.e. a respiratory arrest. Usage of the manual resuscitator force-feeds the air or oxygen into the lungs of the patient in order to inflate them under pressure, thus creating a means to manually provide positive-pressure ventilation.
