Currently available chemical and photochemical technology permits the conversion of organic pollutants with a wide variety of chemical structures into substances that are less toxic and/or more readily biodegradable by employing chemical oxidizing agents in the presence of a suitable catalyst and/or ultraviolet light to oxidize or destroy the pollutant of interest.
