About Travertine
Travertine is a type of land-based limestone that forms around mineral springs, particularly hot springs. It has a fibrous or concentric appearance and comes in white, tan, cream, and even rusty colours. Travertine is a sedimentary rock formed by the chemical precipitation of calcium carbonate minerals from fresh water, most commonly found in springs, rivers, and lakes that is, from surface and ground waters. Travertine, in its broadest sense, includes deposits from both hot and cold springs, as well as the porous, spongy rock known as tufa and cave features known as speleothems which include stalactites and stalagmites. Calcrete is not a type of travertine because it is calcium minerals deposited as a horizon in the soil profile.
