About Diphenyl Methane
Diphenylmethane, or more commonly (C6H5) 2CH2, is a compound that can be referred to as diphenylmethane; usually in chemical writings, it can be simplified to make it shorter as CH2 Ph2 or BnPh. In general, diphenylmethane is an organic compound that refers to a central methane molecule through which two phenyl groups replace two hydrogen atoms. A colourless liquid at room temperature or a white crystalline solid, it has a pleasant, aromatic smell and is mostly insoluble in water. However, it dissolves nicely in organic solvents like alcohol, ether, and benzene. Frydel-Craft alkylation is a widely used method of synthesizing diphenylmethane: benzyl chloride treatment with benzene in the presence of aluminum chloride (AlCl3) capture as Lewis acid catalyst. A mild acidity characterizes the methylene (−CH2−) group in this compound, diphenylmethane. Such acidic property allows it to be deprotonated by a strong base, thus promoting further transformations like alkylation reactions at the methylene carbon.
