About GPS and INS Integrated Positioning System
A GPS and INS Integration Positioning System refers to the combination of two important navigation technologies: the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Inertial Navigation System (INS), with the purpose of providing accurate continuous positions. GPS serves to position a receiver based on the satellite signals and gives very high accuracies; conversely, environments with denser urbanization, underground spaces, and bad weather also have cases where the GPS signals diminish or become null. INS comes in here, where it tracks movements and orientations using accelerometers and gyroscopes to estimate positions accurately without the use of GPS signals. Thus, by merging the two systems, the combined positional system would improve the overall efficiency and validity, as well as availability of location data. With GPS, there will be absolute positioning when signals are clear; then INS is additionally compensating for the lost GPS signal by estimating movement to arrive at a position. This integration can especially benefit those systems found in dynamic and challenging environments such as autonomous vehicles, aircraft, and marine navigation. It may also provide real-time data for applications where high precision is requisite, such as surveying, robotics, and geospatial mapping.
