About Corneal Cross Linking Devices
Corneal cross-linking (CXL) devices are medical instruments used in a treatment designed to strengthen and stabilize the cornea, primarily for patients with conditions like keratoconus or post-refractive surgery ectasia. This minimally invasive procedure involves the application of riboflavin (vitamin B2) drops to the cornea, followed by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. The UV light activates the riboflavin, causing the collagen fibers in the cornea to bond more tightly, which increases the strength and rigidity of the corneal tissue. CXL is primarily used to slow or halt the progression of keratoconus, a condition where the cornea becomes thin and bulges into a cone shape, leading to distorted vision. By strengthening the cornea, CXL helps prevent further deformation and the need for more invasive treatments like corneal transplants. The procedure has proven to be safe and effective, with many patients experiencing improved corneal stability and better vision quality. Corneal cross-linking devices are highly specialized, with different models offering various features such as customizable UV light intensity, treatment duration, and riboflavin delivery systems.
