About Ammonia-
Ammonia (NH3) is a colourless, pungent gas composed of nitrogen and hydrogen. Ammonia has alkaline properties and is corrosive. The major use of ammonia is as a fertilizer; it is also used as a refrigerant gas, for the purification of water supplies, and in the manufacture of plastics, explosives, textiles, pesticides, dyes, and other chemicals. Ammonia is also being explored as a potential energy carrier and storage solution, particularly in the context of green or sustainable energy. The growth of the renewable energy sector, such as wind and solar power, could impact the demand for ammonia as a form of energy storage or a feedstock for green hydrogen production.

Market Leaders and their expansionary development strategies
In March 2023, CF Industries Holdings, Inc. acquired Incitec Pivot Limited for IPL’s ammonia production complex. The facility has a nameplate capacity of 880,000 tons of ammonia annually. The acquisition will enhance industry-leading ammonia production capabilities, deploys our capital efficiently and provides long-term value for both companies’ shareholders. and In May 2022, LSB Industries, Inc. acquired thyssenkrupp Uhde USA, LLC to develop a project to produce approximately 30,000 metric tons of zero-carbon or green ammonia per year at LSB’s Pryor, Oklahoma facility. Green ammonia is produced by extracting hydrogen from water using an electrolyzer powered by a renewable energy source, such as solar or wind. Since no natural gas or other fossil fuels are used as the feedstock to the ammonia production process, nor as the power source, the end-product has no associated carbon emissions.
In March 2023, Aramco, one of the world’s leading integrated energy and chemicals companies, and Linde Engineering, a global leader in the production and processing of gases, develop a new ammonia cracking technology. The collaboration between the two companies will combine Linde Engineering and Aramco’s experience and capabilities in industrial research and development, lower-carbon hydrogen, and ammonia cracking technology.
