MP5 is a 9x19mm Parabellum submachine gun designed in the 1960s by a team of engineers from the German small weapons company. The MP5 has over 100 varieties and clones, including various semi-automatic versions. The MP5 has a hammer firing mechanism and a three-position fire mode selector in the trigger group. The selection lever is operated with the thumb of the shooting hand and may be configured in a variety of ways. When the bolt is fired, the gases from the powder exert rearward pressure on it as it exits the chamber. It causes a calculated delay, allowing the bullet to escape the barrel and the gas pressure to recover to a safe level before removing the bullet case from the chamber.
