What is Internal Mould Release Agent (IMR)?
Internal Mould Release Agent (IMR) is a dissolved component in the resin mix that is highly soluble in the carrier solvent, such as styrene. Due to volumetric shrinkage, pressure, and temperature, the product drops out of the solution and migrates to the surface during cure. IMRs are typically used in mechanized processes, but they can also be used with highly detailed hand lay-up tooling. One significant benefit is consistency, as external release systems rely solely on operator skill, which does not always meet the needs of the designer or try-to-formulate chemist. Some mold release agents are sprayed directly onto the mold's tool steel. Some of these include silicone and lightweight materials. Other mould release agents are coated or sprayed onto the moulding powder's surface. To avoid passing through an extruder, this is done in batch blenders just before packing out. Most release agents that are melt blended with polymers can be used in this manner.
