Feed Grade Active Dry Yeast Market Scope
Yeasts are microscopic fungi, single-celled organisms that are generally around 5 to 10 microns in size. They are given Latin names that represent their genus and species (e.g. Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Candida utilize). Species differ from one another by: where they occur, their cell morphology or shape, how they metabolize different substrates, and how they reproduce. While there are nearly 50,000 species of fungi, there are only 60 different genera of yeast, representing around 500, different species. Yeasts are abundant throughout the environment. They are found in grain kernels, grain by-products, silage, hay, and even soil and water. Our laboratory has determined that various feed ingredients contain anywhere from a few thousand (103) live yeast cells per gram to more than a million (106) per gram. Several species have proven to be very beneficial to humans, while some imperfect yeasts are known to be pathogenic. But most yeasts are benign saprophytes and have not been shown to be beneficial or harmful to humans or animals. Active dry yeast (95% dry matter) is the predominant viable yeast available to the feed industry. Production of active dry yeast is achieved using submerged culture bioreactors or aerobic fermentors. The aim is to provide nutrients (oxygen, nitrogen, carbohydrates) to the yeast and allow them to multiply and create new generations of yeast cells. They reproduce by "gestation" whereby a daughter cell develops from the parent cell and forms a bud, and when the daughter matures both will reproduce. Hence its growth is exponential.

The National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for this sector was proposed in 1998 and promulgated in 2001. In these actions, the EPA identified acetaldehyde as the hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emitted in the largest quantities from the manufacturing of nutritional yeast. The standards for this sector consist of a volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration limit (as a surrogate for acetaldehyde) and a percent-of-batches requirement.
