Distilled water is the type of water that has been boiled into steam and condensed back into liquid in a separate container. Impurities that are present in the original water do not boil below or near the boiling point of water hence they remain in the original container. However, distilled water is generally a type of purified water. Non-volatile or mineral components in the water remain when the water evaporates or boils away. Water escaping as steam, such as from a boiler, heating system, or steam engine leaves behind all of the dissolved materials that lead to mineral deposits known as boiler scales. Small volume humidifiers such as cigar humidifiers can use distilled water to prevent mineral build-up. Certain biological applications require controlled contamination, especially in experiments. For instance, distilled water that is to be added to an aquarium would remove all the known and unknown non-volatile contaminants. Living things need certain minerals; Adding distilled water to an ecosystem like an aquarium would decrease the concentration of these minerals. It is expected that fish and other living things that evolved to survive in lakes and oceans will thrive in mineral areas that are in their original habitat. Controlled contamination and device reliability are critical in medical applications where, for example, distilled water is used in CPAP (Constant Positive Airway Pressure) devices to humidify the air we breathe. Distilled water does not leave any contaminants when the humidifier in the CPAP device evaporates the water. Because of its high purity, distilled water is the choice of laboratories and pharmacies. In chemical, biological, and industrial laboratories, cheaper alternatives such as deionized water are preferred to distilled water. However, if these alternatives are not pure enough, distilled water is used. When exceptionally high purity water is required, double distilled water is used. In general, unpurified water can cause or disrupt chemical reactions and leave mineral deposits after boiling. One method of removing contaminants from water and other liquids is by distillation.
