In October 2019, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved ultra-low gossypol cottonseed, ULGCS, to be utilized as human food and in animal feed. According to the FDA, this dual-purpose cotton variety developed by Texas A&M researchers has the potential to make a significant impact on nutrition security around the world. If adopted by cotton growers worldwide, this variety is capable of providing nutrition security and enhance the profitability of agriculture production. and In March 2019, the government of India lowered the sale price of Bt cotton seeds for a 450-gram packet to INR 730. The license or trait fee, charged by companies has also been slashed by almost 49 percent to INR 20. According to the government, this move can drive the industrialization of a country with enormous social-economic benefits to citizens since cottonseed has vast applications.
According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI),” cottonseed oil should be extracted from clean, sound delinted and decorticated cotton seeds (genus Gossypium). It shall be refined. It shall be clear, free from rancidity, suspended or other foreign matter, separated water, added coloring or flavoring substances or mineral oil. It shall contain an unsaponifiable matter not more than 1.5 percent. The test for Argemone oil shall be negative. Butyro-refractometer reading should be at 40 degrees Celsius. The Iodine Value in cottonseed oil should be from 98 to 123.”
