What is Automotive Gear Lubrication?
Automotive gear oil is a lubricant designed specifically for automobile transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials, as well as other machinery. It has a high viscosity and is typically composed of organosulfur compounds. Some modern automatic transaxles (integrated transmission and differential) lubricate with a lower viscosity hydraulic fluid that is available at pressure within the automatic transmission. Most manual gearbox and differential lubricants contain extreme pressure (EP) and antiwear additives. Dithiocarbamate derivatives and sulfur-treated organic compounds are examples of common sulfurized hydrocarbons. EP additives containing phosphorus/sulfur compounds are corrosive to yellow metals such as copper and/or brass used in bushings and synchronizers. However, the GL-1 class of gear oils contains no EP additives and thus finds use in applications containing yellow metal parts. Backward compatibility of GL-4 oil is not always guaranteed. Because GL-5 has a lower coefficient of friction than GL-4 due to a higher concentration of EP additives, synchros cannot engage as effectively.
