About Glow Discharge OES
Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GD-OES) is a fast and direct analysis technique that is used for surfaces and interfaces of solid materials, both conducting and insulating. GD-OES employs a capacitively coupled low-pressure glow discharge, where the tester is used as the cathode and a copper tube is used as the anode. The sample material is sputtered by the bombardment of ions and fast atoms. GD-OES is quickly becoming one of the most important techniques for the direct analysis of solids. It allows the compositional depth profiling of surfaces and surface layers of both conducting and non-conducting materials. For direct solid analysis, GDS competes with X-ray techniques, but it has fewer matrix effects and lower detection limits. In the last couple of years, there is increasing competition from other plasma techniques such as ICP-OES and ICP-MS when these techniques are coupled with adequate sample introduction techniques such as a spark or laser ablation.
