About Optical Coatings
Optical coatings are thin films applied to optical surfaces (such as lenses, mirrors, and windows) to improve their performance. Coatings control the reflection, transmission, and absorption of light. They thus enable light to be manipulated for specific purposes. Common optical coatings include antireflective (AR) coatings, which reduce unwanted reflections; beam-splitter coatings, which divide light into multiple paths; and protective coatings that enhance the durability of optical surfaces. Other types of optical coatings include highly reflective (HR) mirrors that provide high reflectivity; beam splitters that divide light into multiple paths; and protective coatings that increase the durability of optical surfaces. Other optical coatings—such as mirrors with high reflectivity or filters that allow only certain wavelengths of light to pass through—are critical in scientific instruments, photography, and telecommunications.
